The Loire area derives much of its fame from the large number of historically interesting buildings and towns that exist in the area. The Chateau de Saumur, the local wines, the sandy banks of the river, the equestrian traditions and historical sites, the whole of the Loire region seems to come together in Saumur. There are troglodyte dwellings in the cliffs nearby, if the chic town centre begins to seem too comfortable for you.
